Worship through the Week

'Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee.' This line from George Herbert's hymn, 'King of Glory, King of peace' reminds us that our worship of God is not to be restricted just to Sundays. Although many of us spend time alone in daily prayer and Bible reading, the experience of being part of a group of worshippers is very different. Now that we are part of a Team Ministry with three churches, we are very fortunate to be able to select from a varied timetable of weekday services which are in addition to the Sunday pattern.

Mondays

9.30am St Mary's   A simple said Eucharist with a small congregation, sitting in the choir stalls. The service is usually followed by Morning Prayer, taken from the 'Celebrating Common Prayer' Office book. Morning Prayer is a 15-minute service.

5.00pm St Nicolas'   Evening Prayer taken from the 'Celebrating Common Prayer' Office book. This is a 20-minute service which includes Bible readings and time for prayer, particularly for the various needs of our parishes. The Office is said informally, using the area in the church set aside for weekday prayers.

Tuesdays

9.30am St Nicolas'   Morning Prayer

10.00am St Nicolas'   A simple said Eucharist. A congregation of around a dozen gather at the Lady Chapel altar. This service is always followed by coffee and biscuits in St Nicolas' room. A time for further fellowship. (There are sometimes cakes when birthdays are celebrated!)

5.00pm St Nicolas'   Evening Prayer

8.00pm All Saints'   A said Mass in the Lady Chapel. The Chapel is usually rearranged so that the Mass is celebrated 'in the round'. For half an hour following the Mass the time is used in various ways: for quiet meditation; for guided reflection using readings and music; for discussion, perhaps on the readings of the day.

Wednesdays

9.00am St Mary's   Morning Prayer. Using the 'Celebrating Common Prayer' Office Book. An opportunity to place the day into God's hands.

5.00pm St Nicolas'   Evening Prayer

7.30pm St Mary's   A simple said Eucharist, celebrated at the High Altar with the congregation seated in the choir stalls. A time which is good for those who are out during the day. An opportunity to 'recharge' during half an hour with God!

Thursdays

9.00am All Saints'   Morning Prayer said in the Lady Chapel, using 'Celebrating Common Prayer'. This 20-minute service is followed by 'quiet time' until 10.00am. A time just simply to rest in the presence of God with one another.

10.30am St Mary's   A simple said Eucharist celebrated at the Good Shepherd Chapel altar. A popular time of the week, with the opportunity to stay afterwards for coffee and further fellowship.

11.15am All Saints'   A simple said Mass celebrated at the High Altar with the congregation seated in the choir stalls. This service is also followed by coffee at the West End of the church.

5.00pm St Nicolas'   Evening Prayer

Fridays

7.30am St Marys'   Morning Prayer

8.00am St Mary's   A simple said Eucharist celebrated at the High Altar with the congregation seated in the choir stalls.

9.30am All Saints'   A simple said Mass celebrated at the High Altar with the congregation seated in the choir stalls.

5.00pm St Nicolas'   Evening Prayer

Saturdays

9.00am St Mary's   Morning Prayer

9.30am St Mary's   A simple said Eucharist celebrated at the High Altar with the congregation seated in the choir stalls.

5.00pm St Nicolas'   Evening Prayer

What a huge and varied menu that is! You are very welcome to join us at any of these times and in any of the three churches. Help us to maintain the daily public worship of God in our parishes, for this is our first and highest calling.

Fr Michael
