The Prestbury Passion PlayThe Prestbury Passion Play once again takes place on Good Friday. Originally inspired in 1985 by the then vicar of Prestbury, Ian Hazlewood, it has been performed ever since at approximately three year intervals. The play now has an ecumenical character spreading out beyond St Mary and St Nicolas. At a time when the Church's voice struggles to be heard in an agnostic environment, the Passion Play, with a new script, sets out to dramatise the powerful message of the Last Supper, The Betrayal, The Trial and The Crucifixion. But alongside the familiar story this production highlights the relevance in today's world of the Christian's opposition to show trials, military occupation and injustice in general. It will be followed by a call from Father Stephen to hear and live out the message of Easter Day. The cast, representing, as it does, mainly Jesus Christ, the twelve disciples, the elders, Pilate, Herod and Roman soldiers, is inevitably male dominated: and beards are now being assiduously grown. But the crowd, mostly women and children, play a vital role. By chance the three leading characters are played by local GPs. However, the clergy themselves are active participants. The play is directed by Daphne Philpot with Bob Lyle and Cyril Beer as co-producers: they, with several others, have been continuously involved since the first production. The costs of the production have been covered by fund raising in the Parish, thereby allowing free entry to the performance. A retiring collection in its entirety goes to charity. This year the two performances take place on the Scout Field, the Burgage, Prestbury, on Good Friday, March 25th. The first starts at 11am and the second at 3pm. The Prestbury House Hotel is providing free parking. Jim Mackie The Methodist Recorder
